Named after the La Bella shipwreck (1883-1905)
The sinking of La Bella triggered one of the most heroic rescues in Victoria's shipwreck history.
La Bella was at the end of a rough and tedious 37 day voyage, bringing timber from New Zealand to Warrnambool when rough conditions forced La Bella to run aground on a reef at Lady Bay.
5 of the 12 crew were saved.
La Bella is one of the wrecks included in The Shipwreck Coast Historic Shipwreck Trail - a land based trail along the Great Ocean Road.
The wreck now lies on her port side in sheltered water inside the reef she struck, which divers can explore today.
The reef the La Bella struck now bears it's name.
